Physicochemical Properties
Chemical Composition
- It is a ferroalloy mainly composed of barium (Ba), silicon (Si) and a small amount of iron (Fe). Usually, the content of barium is about 33%, and the content of silicon is about 35%.
Physical Properties
- Appearance: It typically appears as lumps or granules with a metallic luster on the surface, usually in a silver-gray color.
- Density: The density is generally in the range of 3.5 - 4.5 g/cm³.
- Melting Point: The melting point is approximately between 1200 - 1300°C.
Production Process
It is usually produced by smelting barium-containing ores, silica and other raw materials in an electric furnace.
Coke or other reducing agents are added in the furnace. Under high temperature conditions, reduction reactions occur to generate ferro barium silicon alloy.
Applications
In Steelmaking
It is mainly used as a deoxidizer and desulfurizer in the steelmaking process1. It can effectively remove oxygen and sulfur in molten steel, improve the purity of steel, and enhance the strength, toughness and corrosion resistance of steel.
In Casting
In the casting industry, it is used as an inoculant1. It can promote the formation of graphite spheroids in cast iron, improve the mechanical properties of castings, and is beneficial to the casting process.
In Other Fields
It can also be used in the production of some special alloys and as a raw material for the preparation of barium-containing and silicon-containing chemical products.
