Ferrophosphorus FeP23
Ferrophosphorus FeP23
Ferrophosphorus FeP23 is an important metallurgical raw material.
Ferrophosphorus is an alloy of iron and phosphorus. It is formed by the reaction of iron and phosphorus at high temperatures. Ferrophosphorus is commonly used in the steel industry, particularly in the smelting process, as a dephosphorizing agent or as an additive in other alloy compositions. It is typically used to improve the properties of steel, increasing its strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance.

PROPERTIES
Chemical Composition
-
The main components are iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P), with phosphorus content typically around 22% - 24%. It's named FeP23 approximately based on the phosphorus content.
-
Besides, it contains trace amounts of other elements like silicon (Si), carbon (C), sulfur (S), manganese (Mn) and titanium (Ti). Usually, the silicon content is no more than 3.0%, the carbon content is no more than 1.0%, the sulfur content is no more than 0.5%, the manganese content is no more than 2.0%, and the titanium content is no more than 1.5%.
Physical Properties
- Appearance: It is usually in the form of lumps or granules, with a silver-gray metallic luster on the surface.
- Density: It has a relatively high density, generally between 6.8 - 7.8 g/cm³.
- Melting Point: The melting point is relatively high, approximately between 1050 - 1100°C.
Production Process
- It is generally produced through a reduction reaction in an electric furnace using raw materials such as phosphate rock, iron ore and coke.
- In the high-temperature environment of the electric furnace, phosphate rock is reduced by coke to produce phosphorus vapor. Then the phosphorus vapor reacts with molten iron to form ferrophosphorus FeP23.
Applications
In Steelmaking
In the steelmaking process, adding ferrophosphorus FeP23 can effectively improve the strength, hardness and corrosion resistance of steel. It can also enhance the machinability of steel, making the steel processing more convenient and improving production efficiency.
In Cast Iron
When added to cast iron, it can improve the fluidity of the molten iron, which is beneficial for the casting process. It helps to improve the performance and surface quality of castings. For some special cast irons, such as wear-resistant cast irons, a proper amount of FeP23 can significantly improve their wear resistance.
