Ferrophosphorus FeP24
Ferrophosphorus FeP24
Ferrophosphorus FeP24 is an important metallurgical raw material.
Ferrophosphorus is an alloy of iron and phosphorus. It is formed by the reaction of iron and phosphorus at high temperatures. Ferrophosphorus is commonly used in the steel industry, particularly in the smelting process, as a dephosphorizing agent or as an additive in other alloy compositions. It is typically used to improve the properties of steel, increasing its strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance.

PROPERTIES
Chemical Composition
- Its main components are iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P), with the phosphorus content usually being around 23% - 25%.
- It also contains small amounts of other elements. For instance, the silicon (Si) content is no more than 3.0%, the carbon (C) content is no more than 1.0%, the sulfur (S) content is no more than 0.5%, the manganese (Mn) content is no more than 2.0%, and the titanium (Ti) content is no more than 1.5%.
Physical Properties
- Appearance: It is usually in the form of lumps or granules, with a silver-gray metallic luster on the surface.
- Density: It has a relatively high density, generally between 6.8 - 7.8 g/cm³.
- Melting Point: The melting point is relatively high, approximately between 1050 - 1100°C.
Production Process
- It is produced by the reduction reaction of phosphate rock, iron ore, coke and other raw materials in an electric furnace.
- The main reaction process is that the phosphate rock is reduced by coke at high temperature to generate phosphorus vapor, and the phosphorus vapor reacts with molten iron to form ferrophosphorus.
Applications
Steel Industry
Adding ferrophosphorus in the steelmaking process can improve the strength, hardness and corrosion resistance of steel, and also improve the machinability of steel. When adding ferrophosphorus in cast iron, it can improve the fluidity of molten iron and enhance the performance and surface quality of castings. For example, gray cast iron containing 0.5% phosphorus can increase its tensile strength, and wear-resistant cast iron containing about 0.15% phosphorus can significantly improve the wear resistance.
Other Fields
Ferrophosphorus containing 20% phosphorus can be ground into ultrafine powder to replace ultrafine zinc powder as coating. In addition, ferrophosphorus can also be used as a protective material against radioactive radiation.
